Varilrix (Varicella Vaccine) is a live attenuated vaccine used to protect against varicella (chickenpox), a contagious viral infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus (VZV). The vaccine helps the immune system recognize and fight the virus, reducing the risk of contracting chickenpox or reducing the severity of the disease if contracted.

Varilrix is typically administered as an injection, usually as a single dose for individuals who have not had chickenpox or have not been vaccinated. For some individuals, especially children, a second dose may be given to ensure adequate protection.

Varilrix is recommended for:

• Children who have not had chickenpox or the vaccine.
• Adults who have not had chickenpox or have not been vaccinated.
• Individuals who are at higher risk of exposure to varicella, such as healthcare workers or those in close contact with children.

The vaccine is given subcutaneously (under the skin) and is generally well-tolerated. Common side effects are mild and may include:

• Pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site.
• Fever
• Rash (which may be mild and similar to chickenpox but is usually not severe).

In rare cases, more serious side effects can occur, such as an allergic reaction or severe rash. However, the vaccine is considered safe and is highly effective in preventing chickenpox.
